Week 8: DQ 1 & DQ 2

DQ1Go to the contents of any current (2001-present), peer-reviewed leadership journal; find any topic that is receiving increased emphasis by researchers. Describe the topic in one paragraph, including a brief overview of methodology. What are the implications of the increased emphasis for future research?

My response:

Overview of Methodology
The article discusses the research and data collection methodology used towards leading virtual teams and the 6 leadership practices of the leaders. In their first phase, they talk with the team members to get as much feedback as possible. In the second phase, the researchers explored how the virtual team members communicated with each other and which teams worked the most efficiently out of several hundred teams they analyzed. The researchers found those virtual team leaders that were willing to overcome any barriers, such as cross cultural, feelings of isolation, or time zones, were more likely to do well with virtual teams.
This topic places emphasis in this type of research as organizations are anticipating that leaders in the future will continue to be managing virtual teams and supply training for it.

DQ2:

What one important point did you learn from this course about leadership that you did not already intuitively know from interacting with family, friends, and business associates?

The one important point that I learned was that I did not know there were several different leadership theories.  I figured that there would be a few but there are really many, and all can be disputed against each other because it depends on the individuals style and power type.

What is the importance of the interaction between intuition and learning in the context of leadership?

With an intuitive leader, the leader intuitively believes in what is the best way to go about leading from their personal experience whereas with learning, the leader learns new techniques and skills from resources they have derived.   The importance between both in leadership is that leaders need each when they are leading.  Their followers will follow the leader because of these aspects as it is helpful to have an instinctive knowledge as well as a willingness to learn.

Week 7: DQ2, Reflection, and Essay

DQ2: What subjects or topic areas should be included in leadership development programs in the public and private sectors? Why did you select these topics? Are leadership training programs today effective? Explain.

My response:
A topic area that I believe should be included is leadership mentoring as it would be beneficial to leadership development programs in both sectors.  Mentoring can benefit students as well as leaders alike.  As the mentoring increases the confidence and learning in the students, it also is a necessity for the leaders because leaders need followers (Precey & Entrena, 2011).  Through mentoring, leaders will also learn from the feedback of their students or trainee to enhance both skills and experience.  The students or trainees will also develop experiences and perspectives from the leader.  By using mentoring in a development program, the students will learn several scenarios and approaches in an active work-related session to enhance the theories that they have learned from their schooling.  The trainee will also benefit from asking questions to the mentor as well as evaluating team processes through their work. Through team experiences and feedback from the leader, the trainee will derive a wealth of information, and network benefits.  I think that there are some leadership training programs that might be more effective than others.  I believe that "the standardization of training" (Twehous et al, 1991, p. 109) will help these programs to exist and benefit trainees, but still depends on the industry so as to meet the required skills that are necessary in that workplace.

Reflection question:
Post your reflection by creating a 150-200 word reflective statement describing how the week’s learning has affected your thought processes, development, and professional disposition. This statement should be a forum for you to reflect on your personal learning process, challenges, moments of discovery, life experiences, readings, and interactions. Ideally, you will use these statements throughout the course and the program to document your own development as a scholar, practitioner, and leader, and to reflect critically on the changes that occur during this process.
My response:
In this week, I have learned that there are different perspectives of what emotional intelligence (EI) is.  In my own research, I have found that it involves the ability to understand other’s emotions and behaviors as well as my own.  In other responses, I have learned that it can involve a self-awareness and social skills.  EI is actively in the organization I work in but it is not always positively reinforced.  I also believe that mentoring should be further utilized in leadership development programs in both the public and private sectors.  The process can be informative to both the leader as well as the followers.  In my essay and self-assessments, I have also learned some things about myself.  I found that I have leadership power in legitimate, expert, and referent areas and leadership styles in my concern for people and tasks equally.  I am on my way towards using transformational leadership more effectively in my organization.

(Note: has not been graded yet.)

Week 7: DQ1

What is the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and leadership? Do you see evidence of the leaders in your organizations displaying EI? Explain.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand both “one’s own and other’s emotions” (Corona, 2010, p. 24) and use this knowledge to influence one’s choices or behaviors.  This is related to leadership in that leadership also uses “a social exchange” (Corona, 2010, p. 24) and influences others to accomplish a goal.  I believe I witness EI in my organization sometimes.  I have seen both positive and negative motives of this skill.  Sometimes a manager will use this knowledge to take advantage of an employee to get certain results but many times it is useful to understand other’s emotions to help the employee with their tasks as well. In some tasks at my organization, I am influenced to work extra hours without extra pay because my manager knows that I enjoy working with computers.  I tend to do this because I enjoy what I do but it is unfair to take advantage of it.

Reflective Leadership Plan
Resources: University Library, Internet

Optional Resources: It may be beneficial to review the letter of intent you provided during the enrollment process and your responses to SEM/700R reflection questions. These sources may provide a crucial baseline for defining your leadership style and aspirations.

Write a 1,400- to 1,750-word paper in which you translate your course learning into a reflective personal leadership development plan. Your plan should define a strategy for maximizing your leadership effectiveness and include the following components:

·         Discuss the leadership theory or theories supporting your plan.

·         Explain your leadership strengths and weaknesses and what you will do to capitalize on your strengths and modify your weaknesses.

·         Address gaps between the leader you are now and the leader you would like to become.

·         Suggest action items you will realistically implement to close gaps between the leader you are now and the leader you would like to become.

·         Provide a realistic implementation timeline for each action item on your plan.

·         Discuss how you will actually use your plan to impact your leadership, your followers, and your organization.

·         Discuss how you will assess and modify your plan to ensure it is on track.

·         Consider your plan, not just a paper to satisfy course requirements, but a living, working document.

·         Provide assessment scores and references to course readings and appropriate peer-reviewed literature to support your judgments, assertions, and development goals.

·         Because self-reflection is a critical component of your leadership plan, first-person is appropriate for writing this assignment.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Weekly Reflection
Each week in this course, you will engage your thoughts and abilities as a scholar, a practitioner, and a leader to advance your knowledge and personal academic agenda. These weekly reflections help you position yourself as a reflexive thinking scholar, practitioner, and leader. Consider saving these weekly statements, which serve as a critical reflection upon your growth as a scholar, practitioner, and leader throughout the program.

Create a reflective and applied statement describing how the week’s learning has affected your thought processes, development, and professional disposition. This statement should reflect your personal learning process—challenges, moments of discovery, life experiences, and interactions. You may also include questions for the course facilitator regarding material that may still be unclear in your reflection. Ideally, you will use these reflections throughout the course and the program to document your development as a scholar, practitioner, and leader, and to reflect critically on the changes that occur during this process.

Format any citations and references in your reflective statement consistent with APA guidelines.

Reply to the thread designated for Weekly Reflections, and post your response in the body of the post, not as an attachment.

Week 5
Discussion question #1
What is power, and what is the relationship between power and leadership?

My response
My perception of power in an organization means that an individual or group has the ability to make decisions for the organization and individuals in that organization.  In an organization, individuals might recognize power based on the title and position.

The hierarchy of power and leadership displays the connection and relationship between the two.  For example, in the organization I work for, the founder/CEO is the highest position; under him are the CTO, COO and CFO, and so on.  The leader and person in the position of power can be one in the same.  The person who has the most power has the ability to make the decision that the followers need to adhere to.  However, the person in a position of power is not omnipotent and can be overthrown in some organizations or hierarchies.  Furthermore, the power that one might have in an organization can be positive or negative.  The one in the position of power may make impulsive or unsuitable decisions based on their inexperienced ideals or emotions.

Discussion question #2
Describe a situation in which you have acted as a transformational or transactional leader.
Were you successful or unsuccessful? Explain.
What type of power did you use?
Was this use of power the most effective for getting the results you wanted? Explain.

My response
Describe a situation in which you have acted as a transformational or transactional leader.

As a web product manager for my current position, I have had to do some closely related responsibilities to what a project manager does but with the exception of making sure the product meets both the requirements of the client with objectivity to the overall end-user experience.  My responsibilities in the organization may encourage me to practice a transactional leadership method rather than a transformational one.  For example, when I receive a large project, I need to follow up with the developers, data processing, and systems operations to ensure that their parts are on target with deadlines and meet the specific requirements tasked to them.  In addition, many times when our team completes a large project on time and satisfies all of the requirements, we have rewarded them with a lunch, or an after work event, like bowling.

Were you successful or unsuccessful? Explain.
I believe that I was successful as I still have my current position.  I only say that because I am new to this position and we have had many team lunches from the overall productivity from using transactional leadership methods.

What type of power did you use?
My influence over the team is powered by my charisma, enforcing the business requirements, assigning tasks, and using my experience with people in development via “influence tactics” (Wren, 1995, p. 339).

Was this use of power the most effective for getting the results you wanted? Explain.
This power is most effective in the web development environment of a business. Since I was also once a web developer, I have very specific knowledge of the processes, flows, and structure about how web development is perceived and accomplished.

Team paper
Note:  I am only inserting the portion I wrote myself.

Individual reflection summary
Post your reflection by creating a 150-200 word reflective statement describing how the week’s learning has affected your thought processes, development, and professional disposition. This statement should be a forum for you to reflect on your personal learning process, challenges, moments of discovery, life experiences, readings, and interactions. Ideally, you will use these statements throughout the course and the program to document your own development as a scholar, practitioner, and leader, and to reflect critically on the changes that occur during this process.

My response
In this week I have learned that there are different types of power and how it is used to influence others.  From the readings and self-assessments, I have learned there are several different power attributes: reward, coercive, legitimate, expert, and referent.

Also from the self-assessments, I found that I am more of a laissez-faire type of leader from the self-assessments.  In terms of individuals in the web development field that already have the expertise to do the work, this can be an effective approach as it lets the developers do the work with checkpoints to see their progress and the status of the work.  I think I would adjust my leadership style depending on the type of position and requirements if necessary.

In this week, there were also some challenges with our team's assignment.  It was a great learning experience as we all worked together to create the essay that meets the requirements.  We overcame some misunderstandings of the assignment, we made revisions to our context, and we have cooperated in bringing the team assignment together.

Week 6
Discussion question #1
What is innovation? How does innovation align with leadership?

My response
Innovation is something that is new, like an idea or vision and "makes new things possible" (Wren, 1995, p. 467).  For example, new technology brings innovative ideas and different perspectives of how technology can be used.  New technology is also one of my favorite things to research, especially the robotics area.  Innovation can align with leadership in a way that allows for the leader to understand what the future might bring and to take that knowledge to benefit the organization.  Leaders in an organization should "stay abreast of the latest innovations and aware of their potential for helping to run every aspect of the business more effectively" (Wren, 1995, p. 467). Innovation in an organization also is not limited to businesses and can be found almost anywhere.

Discussion question #2
What are the boundaries of innovation in your organization? How were these boundaries established? How do these boundaries enhance or hinder innovation?

My response
In my organization, there are some boundaries to innovation.  In order to understand the organization and its goals, it's important to understand that the organization focuses on accomplishing our client's goals to build websites for them.  Our clients have a vision of their website's appearance, and functionality.  We can advise them on the restrictions and benefits of the website's technology as well as provide them with input on the website's user interface to an extent.  The clients have the option to choose the input they prefer or none at all.  So our boundaries of innovation are restricted by the client's wants and needs for their website.  The organization's innovative ideas are also restricted by the company's leaders.  These boundaries were established by the leaders, which are labeled as the CTO and CEO as they are the owners of the company and they have the ability to approve or deny any innovations they believe do not fit into their company's goals.  Some of the boundaries they use do benefit the organization.  If the innovation is not a good fit for the company, they will deny it.  For example, the organization denied certain new automated processes which would replace some employees positions.  The organization did not believe that this innovation was necessary enough to warrant the innovation.

My response
In this week, I have learned that there is a relationship between leadership and innovation.  Innovation’s relationship with leadership allows for a leader to try to look towards the future and to take that knowledge to benefit the organization.  I also learned that there are different types of innovation as well.  In the leadership role, one will need to be innovative to accomplish certain tasks as well as enhance the organization's goals.  I have also learned that there are also boundaries and restrictions to innovation.  Many companies are not always interested in the innovation that is proposed to them; however it is still important to propose those innovations so that the organization can be aware of the changes that are occurring in their market and possibly incorporate new information into their organization in the future to keep up-to-date.  Additionally, organizations need to incorporate a strategy with innovation so that they are prepared for any problems that might arise in the future.
