Week 3: DQ 2, Reflection & Reflection Essay

Discussion Question
Week 3 DQ 2
Due Day 5
Should information systems managers delay investment in new technologies until there are substantial demonstrated benefits and the price of the new technologies drops? What are the advantages and disadvantages of being pioneers of new technology within an industry?

My response:


Risk Factor
In a technology organization, there are certain risk factors that should occur; otherwise the current technology might become obsolete.  Research and need is always important towards implementing anything new.  The way I would prefer to go about and implement a new technology would be to implement it incrementally if there is not enough data.  If the technology is very expensive, I might wait for more technical details; research the need for the equipment, or for the price to drop to a reasonable amount.  This might require a budget that is set aside for research and development.  One thing to consider is that from a business standpoint, the corporate officers might not accept the expense if the current technology meets the needs of the organization and there is no proof that the new technology is beneficial.  As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Pro/Con
There are several advantages towards using new technology.  Being the first organization to use the technology can be beneficial and enhance a company.  Using the most up-to-date equipment can also look good in comparison to other companies to show that they are innovative and willing to move with the times.  There are risks associated with each of these benefits and not every company is willing to or can afford to take these risks.  One risk is that the organization can spend a lot of money on the new technology and not derive any benefit from it.  Other organizations also might not appreciate the incentives that the new technology can bring and cause clients or affiliates to withdraw from the organization.

My response:


I’ve learned that technology can be used for many different things inside and outside of and organization and that technology can be learned in different ways as well.  Through school, discussion forums, the internet, television, books, and other's experiences, I have learned several different aspects of how to derive information from these resources and help others with their own research.

I have also learned that everyone has different interests in their concentration of information systems.  In my team, each member had something different to concentrate on.  I preferred to concentrate on MMORPGs while others chose traffic control systems and an EHR system.

In terms of reflection analysis, I find it interesting that we are reflecting on what we are learning.  I believe that this gives us more time to think about our choices, and explore each other’s subjects and topics to discover more ways on how to use an information system and technology.

Week 3: DQ1



Identify and describe a major trend in information systems. If this trend continues, what will the future of computers look like? Describe the hardware, software, and applications that you expect to be prevalent in the future, and explain how their emergence is rooted in the historical development of information technology.

My response

The other day I was watching a show called "Oddities" on the Discovery Channel (2012) and it features a store called Obscura Antiques & Oddities.  The store features many eclectic items that people have sold or wish to purchase.  In the episode that I watched, a man brought in an artifact that the store owners were unsure of the authenticity of.  Especially since seller was trying to sell it for $50,000, the store owners needed to verify that this artifact was the real deal.  They eventually had to take it to a university that had the proper equipment run the artifact through a scanner that derived 3D data directly to a database with 3D images of the inside and outside of the artifact.  The system had the ability to virtually cut through the 3D image to see the age and authenticity of the artifact.


The popularity of 3D technology in general has produced a substantial impact on our society.  From entertainment to data analysis, 3D technology is making it's way up the technology ladder.  Some of my friends believe that 3D technology is a fad because when it first because popular to us in the 1980's, it died fairly quickly.  I believe that 3D technology is becoming more popular now though because of the new technology and enhanced knowledge that we have.  I think that we will eventually see something like what we would on Star Wars with 3D portable communications and computer systems in the distant future.  Joking aside, the future does hold some potential even now and especially in the medical industry, for items such as BioDigital Systems (2011) where their software and hardware stores and presents data for doctors to use to analyze their patients without surgery.

Lessons Learned

In all of the books, I learned that they all have the same themes, which are the fundamentals of IT and IS as it is pertinent to a corporation.  I did not notice much on the effects of educational systems though, however, each starts off with what can happen, the pros and cons, in information technology and the role of information systems.  Haag & Cummings discuss computer threats as well as the business strategy aspects, such as the Porter’s Five Forces Model, and frameworks that can enhance a business using information technology.  Each book discuss a little bit about the evolution of hardware and software.  Each book also continues on to show several case studies and business theory in IT and IS.  Haag & Cummings even displays the basics of what a database and website code looks like.  Much of what each book describes is simply good business strategies and theory in each industry of IT and IS to keep a business’s ideals and technology sustained.  Many of these strategies should be learned and enhanced as time goes on. 

Pros and cons

I like the breakdown of each book as it discusses the different models and theories.  I especially like how Laudon & Laudon display realistic business charts and ideas to emphasize the impact that IT could have on any business or organization, such as the discussion revolving around Apple products and strategic advantages.

The only things that I was only a little disappointed in were that some of the technologies discussed were a bit dated.  For example, in Haag & Cummings, the most popular browsers were Netscape, Internet Explorer, and FireFox.  Although they are noteworthy, being in the web technology business, I do not believe many people are using Netscape as much.  The most popular browsers that I am aware of for the Windows-based computers are Internet Explorer (Keynote, 2012) and FireFox but their versions are much higher now than what is in this book.  Also, Chrome and Safari outweigh Netscape as well.  Netscape lost its popularity in the early 2000s when FireFox allowed flexible addons for developers, and more security and control for its end-users.  Although this isn’t the only dated piece I have found, the books still use valid points and theories that should be used in IT businesses that I could continue to learn from.
