Week 2 Assignments... Good lord!

Week Two

Dialogue

Course Assignments

1.       Readings

o        Read pp. 87-114 and chapter 7 of the APA manual.
o        Review any additional materials located in the Week Two Materials section of the student website.

2.       Individual Assignment: Discussion Questions

The course facilitator will post Discussion Question (DQ) threads and due dates prior to the start of each week. For planning purposes only, the DQs are provided here. Responses should be 150-300 words. Please post your DQ responses only in the facilitator’s designated threads in the Main forum. No attachments and no learner posted threads will be allowed.

o        DQ 1:  How do you respond to constructive feedback? What does the ability to receive and integrate feedback say about you as a scholar-practitioner-leader?

o        DQ 2:  What is the difference between summarizing and critically analyzing a text? Assess the quality of your critical analysis in your Week One paper.

o        DQ 3:  Reflect on the feedback from your Week One paper. Based on this feedback, what general strategies would you put in place to help you develop as a scholar? (Note: You will identify specific strategies on your Week Two Revision Matrix.)

3.       Individual Assignment: Participation

Due 3 days per week

o        Post two substantive messages (150-300 words each), 3 days per week. Follow the participation guidelines located in the top portion of the syllabus.

4.       Individual Assignment: Revision Matrix

Due Saturday (Day 5) of Week Two

·         Resources: Revision Matrix Template located in the Week Two Materials section of the student website.

·         Review your facilitator’s feedback comments on the Week One essay.

·         Complete the revision matrix as follows:

o        In the first column, copy/paste each facilitator feedback comment from your graded essay.  Include feedback comments that your facilitator inserted in colored text in the body of the paper and/or numbered comments in the margin or at the bottom of the screen (depending on how the facilitator formatted the comments). If the facilitator made the same comment multiple times, you can include the comment once, but you should indicate how many times the facilitator made the comment. For numbered comments, include the comment number(s).
o        In the second column, accurately put each facilitator comment in your own words.
o        In the third column, include a detailed and specific action plan for implementing each facilitator feedback comment in your final paper. As part of your action plan, include specific page numbers from the APA manual. Note: Page numbers alone do not qualify as an action plan.
o        Your action plan must demonstrate that you have engaged in critical thinking about how you will improve the content as well as the writing style of your final essay. Simplistic and vague statements such as “I will improve my writing” or “I will use the APA manual” do not qualify as detailed and specific improvement strategies.
o        Include any feedback-related questions for your facilitator at the bottom of the matrix.

·         Submit this assignment to your Assignments page as a Microsoft® Word attachment by Saturday (Day 5).

5.       Individual Assignment: Annotated Bibliography

Due Sunday (Day 6) of Week Two

An annotated bibliography is a reference list in which each entry is followed by an annotation or description of the source.

·         Resources: Annotated Bibliography Formatting Sample and University Library—both available in the Week Two Materials section of the student webpage.

·         Important! For the Annotated Bibliography assignment, you must:

o        Use the same format as the Annotated Bibliography Formatting Sample in the Week Two Materials section of the COM/705 course page. You may lose points for failing to the use the correct format.
o        Include an APA-formatted title page – an Author Note is not required
o        Include four sources (one from each database listed below).
o        Include a 1-paragraph annotation in your own words for each source.

·         Start this assignment by thinking of a topic you might wish to research for your doctoral dissertation (or to publish an article in your field). Examples: “Female Leadership in the Aerospace Industry” or “Multiple Intelligences in Elementary Learners.” You will use this research topic to create your annotated bibliography.

·         Go to the University Library by clicking on the Library tab on the student website. On the Library page, click on the University Library link.

·         Select an article from each of the following databases to complete the Annotated Bibliography assignment: Please present your annotations IN THIS ORDER.

o           Dissertations & Theses @ University of Phoenix. From Library Resources, click on Books, Dissertations, and Theses. Click on Dissertations & Theses@University of Phoenix. You will be directed to the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database. Type in your research topic key words. Click on the box to limit your results to “Full text documents only.” Find a dissertation that relates to your topic. Be sure to make a note of all necessary information to reference the dissertation according to the APA manual. Download and skim the full-text version of the dissertation. Then identify two or three key points from the dissertation that describe the study you selected, and summarize these points in a paragraph using your own words. The paragraph will serve as your annotation for this source.

o           ProQuest. From the Library Resources section, click on General Resources. Click on the ProQuest database, and click on the boxes that say “Full text documents only” and “Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed.” Type in your research topic. Once the system has located articles, select one to review, and read the full-text article. Be sure to make a note of all necessary information to reference the article in APA format. Write a paragraph summarizing the article in your own words.

o           EBSCOhost. From the Library Resources section, click on General Resources. Click on the EBSCOhost database, and click on the boxes that say “Full Text” and “Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.” Type in your research topic. Once the system has located articles, select one to review, and read the full-text article. Be sure to note all necessary information to reference the article in APA format. Write a paragraph summarizing the article in your own words.

o           Thomson Gale PowerSearch. From the Library Resources section, click on General Resources. Click on the Thomson Gale PowerSearch database, and click on the boxes that say “to documents with full text” and "to peer-reviewed publications." Type in your research topic. Once the system has located articles, select one to review, and read the full-text article. Be sure to note all necessary information to reference the article in APA format. Write a paragraph summarizing the article in your own words.

·         Format your Annotated Bibliography according to the Annotated Bibliography Formatting Sample on the COM/705 course page. Include an APA-formatted title page.

·         Submit the Annotated Bibliography to your Assignments page as a Microsoft® Word attachment.

6.       Learning Team Assignment: Learning Team Charter

Due Monday (Day 7) of Week Two

·         Resources: Learning Team Charter located in the Learning Team Toolkit.

o        To access the Learning Team Toolkit and Charter, click on the Library Tab on the student website. The links to the Learning Team Charter and Toolkit are both located on the right-hand side of the Library page.

·         Discuss team member roles and responsibilities in your assigned Learning Team forum. Remember that the charter is a working document to help the team function effectively, so be sure to include specific, detailed information in all sections.

IMPORTANT! Merely posting your information – without substantive DISCUSSION with the team – will NOT earn credit for the team charter assignment. Learners are expected to demonstrate critical thinking and analysis skills during the team discussion prior to posting their charter. All team interaction must be documented in the learning team forum. Email, phone conversations, etc. will not earn credit toward the discussion portion of the assignment. If/when communication occurs outside the team forum, a summary (including who participated and what was accomplished) should be posted in the team forum to archive your work.

Note: All team members should participate in the charter development.

·         Complete the Learning Team Charter. The charter should, at a minimum, address the following:

o        What are the team’s detailed ground rules and working agreements? As part of this discussion include the following:

§         How often will team members be expected to post in the Learning Team forum?
§         What are the deadlines for submitting contributions and/or drafts?
§         How much time will the team have to review drafts before final submission?
§         Will there be a team leader?  If so, will leadership rotate? What is the leader’s role?
§         Who will submit the final assignment to the Assignments page?

o        What potential conflicts might arise?

§         What detailed and specific strategies will the team use to address each potential conflict? For example: How will the team proceed if a member is unresponsive and/or fails to contribute appropriately?

·         Write the charter in third person from a group perspective (e.g. “Team Alpha will meet the following deadlines…,” not “I will meet deadlines…”). The charter should reflect a unified team position, not a collection of individual posts.

·         Select one team member submit the Learning Team Charter to the Assignments page as a Microsoft® Word attachment.

7.       Individual Assignment: Weekly Reflection

Due Monday (Day 7) of Week Two

Each week in this course, you will engage your thoughts and abilities as a scholar, a practitioner, and a leader to advance your knowledge and personal academic agenda. These weekly reflections help you position yourself as a reflexive thinking scholar-practitioner-leader. Consider saving these weekly statements; which serve as a critical reflection upon your growth as a scholar-practitioner-leader throughout the program.

·         Create a reflective and applied statement describing how the week’s learning has affected your thought processes, development, and professional disposition. This statement should reflect your personal learning process—challenges, moments of discovery, life experiences, and interactions. You may also include questions for the course facilitator regarding material that may still be unclear in your reflection. Ideally, you will use these reflections throughout the course and the program to document your development as a scholar, practitioner, and leader, and to reflect critically on the changes that occur during this process.

·         Format any citations and references in your reflective statement according to APA standards.

·         Submit your Weekly Reflection by replying to the designated thread in the Main forum (not as an attachment). Responses should be between 150- and 300- words each.
